02 September '03 : The super hucard project is finally showing up.
You can check its page, which is located in the new section goodies.
The files can be downloaded via the ed2k p2p protocol. I'll be sharing the files during daytime in Europe at least. If anyone is willing to provide mirror space in http, ftp, ... I'd be glad to put links to it in the project page.
You can find 3 files so far. You can grab the full version (a raw dump) or the cooked iso and eventually the background .ogg file used to complete the cooked iso.
For any question on the Super Hucard project itself, contact Benjamin Quinn directly.
14 August '03: Greetings from a sunny place !
Just a few word to announce a great thing from the pc engine fan scene. A guy known from the TGHack list has recently contacted some pc engine coders to announce a hucard compilation on cd playable on real pc engine hardware.
The few I've seen is very promising and we're currently trying to convince him to make this public so we can all enjoy a few hucards for "real".
Don't be too much excited, not all games can work with his method. Size matters (only games less than 2 MegaBits can fit) as well as the way the game is coded. But basically, about 60 games can be more or less played.
More or less because the game needs to be patched and he used Hu-Go! to catch opcodes to change. Depending of the game, all the changes to make can be achieve by playing a few minuts with the modified version of Hu-Go!, while others would need to be played up to the end.
So maybe users will be asked for contribution, to achieve a set of fully patched game. Thanks to all of those who helped finding this guy and his project.
02 July '03 : As you've probably noticed, the site underwent a total lifting.
You will find all the usual pages plus a few others (the interactive compatibility list in the Hu-Go! section for instance, or the much improved private area for uploading new files).
Anywhere in this site, you'll find your current position just under the logo, and the various way to get deeper in the site through the sub topics on the right side.
Big thanks to Nostromo, who did the original web design work and who have obviously much more good taste than a mere coder :)
Don't hesitate to point at anything which seems wrong, I'll fix it asap.
19 June '03: Another platform received an official port of Hu-Go!.
It's up to BeOs users to enjoy the version 2.10 thanks to Caz (I have no more info on him, if there's a site or email address, I'll gladly link to it).
You can find the binary as well as the altered sources on BeEmulated. I'll mirror them here later today.
My exams are almost over and so is the new web site design. I'm expecting it to be set up within the next weeks and I hope it will provide a more attractive spot for the pc engine fans.
02 June '03 : A few news, I'm not dead.
The web site design and engine is being rewritten. It should be a clean and light design as it used to be a few years ago. It is based on work made by Nostromo, you'll soon see what he prepared for us.
For Hu-Go! in itself, the new graphical engine is ready. A few bugs remain, as usual, but the result is more accurate than the previous version, I'm glad of having this rewritten.
The arcade card support have been improved too, and a few AC games now works well. Anyway, we're facing the cd support limitation (the plain cd hardware, not the AC specific) and it seems that the cd engine at low level should be rewritten too (The currently used version is the one from Nyef, author of DarcNes). We'll see when this will be done.
The hcd format is anew worked on, thanks to littletux and the investigations made in the ogg vorbis format, the free, open format which is replacing mp3.
Hu-Go! can now dump audio and video into a special format which can then be converted into mpg, xvid or "anything you want" format. Currently the audio isn't perfectly synchronized with the video (which is perfect) but it's still neat, especially on fast machines.
For debian users, you can grab Hu-Go! with an apt source, provided by debian directly. I used their mentor service. To make short, add those lines into your /etc/apt/sources.list :
deb http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free
Then update your cache, and type
apt-get install hugo
(or any graphical equivalent).
10 April '03 : A few news to keep you in touch.
As you may have noticed, a newer version of an Xbox port of Hu-Go! was released some days ago, it includes some of the feature which are only in cvs for now.
Concerning those extra features which are currently worked on, there is an hardware scaling zoom/fullscreen mode (only for linux right now).
For the same price, I also put in a more worked on (understand : working :) open memory handling and some examples (how to see in real time the value of a few registers and control the execution of the emulator), a rewritten command line support (with both short and long options, of --help, --version which hopefully enable nice shells to offer auto completion of command line options).
Some Arcade cards games also begin to work (graphics are bugged but Fatal fury II is quite playable for instance) and at the same time some obscure internal behaviour have been fixed (thanks to Charles Mc Donald for his work most notably).
I kept the best for the end :) Up to now, Hu-Go! was an open source project, but it's now officially a free software one ! Most of it (around 95% in size of code to give an idea) is now GPL and the remaining is either in Modified BSD licence or under the zlib licence (which are both compatible with the GPL).
I forgot to mention it, but if there is some zlib licenced code in Hu-Go!, it's because it now support zipped roms on the fly.
The roadmap for the short/middle term of Hu-Go! : Rewritting the interruption engine (hopefully to fix the support for exotic resolutions and remaining bad drawn lines at the bottom of the screen), network play support and the usual compatibility improvements.
Exclusive flash : From confirmed source, we can now say that someone is trying to collect roms in order to achieve an rpm package and then a classical iso made from most of the public roms for pc engine out there. So, if you've developped such a game, that you are willing to share it for the maximum number of people and that you've not been contacted yet but this individual, mail him.
5 March '03 : Seen the success (and the size) of the windows installer, the server get difficulties feeding everyone at the best pace, so you can download the windows full installer from here instead. This mirror were provided courtesy of Bt Garner. The download system will be improved so that you'll be able to choose a mirror on the principal download page for the next release.
4 March '03 : Hu-Go! 2.10 is publicly available !
This version features a real gui using gtk. It is available as binary packages for debian, redhat/mandrake and windows and the sources works for Linux, Windows and FreeBSD at least.
Lots of improvements have been made. You can zoom in window mode, or use the new fullscreen engine. The graphics emulation have been improved, crashing less games and the sound have also underwent a vast lifting, with the arrival of stereo mode and a perfect sound/noise engine.
The windows version benefits a totally rewritten CD code and audio reading (as it was impossible to play CDs under windows since version 2.00) while the UN*X enjoys the SDL support for joypads.
Developpers can recompile their version of hugo and enjoy the remote control of the emulation (yes, you can totally control the variables of the internals of the emulated pc engine).
This version was done thanks to many contributors, especially Ixion and Black-. Cleaner took care of the FreeBSD adaptation, Zoop and Valérie Tching spotted some bugs, and much more people also helped ...
All of this sign the coming back of Hu-Go! in an active state after a period of calm :) So do the same, come and see the pc engine scene and don't hesitate to involve yourself in it.
The next Hu-Go! release should focus on game compatibility and network support, as usual, stay tuned ...
20 February '03 : Another pc engine emulator had to be welcomed on the pc engine scene. Now, the GP32 can be used to play your favorite pc engine games thanks to Black-.
He has recently released gpengine which is a program based on Hu-Go!, improved with Paul Cliford's documents and polished with the personal touch of Black-.
At the same time, he contributed to spot and fix bugs in Hu-Go! so that the next release should allow even more games to be playable. Ixion has also greatly improved the cd emulation part and I'm working on the reenabling for cd emulation under the various windows flavour.
I thought I could release this week but I think that it's better to wait some more to get a really new Hu-Go!. For the most impatient, don't forget the CVS tarball in Hu-Go! downloads.
